Trans people in public bathrooms

Trans people in public bathrooms

rooms

In recent years, trans and gender non-conforming people have caused a moral panic in many cultures all over the world, especially in the United Kingdom. The media and certain political movements have used this marginalized demographic as a scapegoat to distract from other issues such as rising economic inequality and climate crisis. Much misinformation has been spread in traditional and social media about the supposed threat trans people pose in society. In this workshop we are interested in the specific issue of public bathrooms, and how the gender segregated nature of these spaces excludes trans and gender non-conforming people. We will be putting up posters in public bathrooms around London asking the question: ‘What bathroom should a trans person use to avoid harassment?’ With this question we would like to redirect the focus away from cis people and their alleged ‘discomfort’ to the lived experiences of gender diverse people for whom this issue has far more urgent consequences. The poster will have a QR-code that links to GATEJUMPERS’ website, where respondents can share their thoughts and experience on the topic.
